Dark and dramatic storm clouds. Swedish summer… There are many reasons to love Sweden, and I do, but the weather is (sometimes) not one of them. It CAN be amazingly nice and just perfect in the summer, warm and sunny with low humidity, but often, it’s not. And the past two years have been worse than usual. This summer (2017) was actually the coldest since the 1920s, and fall arrived very early. People in Stockholm were wearing scarves and gloves the first week of September – that’s crazy early even for Sweden.
But, with all that unsettled weather comes interesting clouds. As I mentioned in the Beautiful, Cool and Weird Clouds post, clouds fascinate me. I can watch them forever, and always feel incredibly lucky when a particularly dramatic cloud presents itself.
I shot these storm clouds on the island of Gotland during a rainy week in August (the only rainy week they had that entire summer!). I was only there for a week, and had planned to alternate shooting days with days on the beach, but that didn’t happen. Instead, I spent the entire week exploring with my camera and was really very happy with my vacation after all. Gotland is so amazingly beautiful that you can spend a year shooting there every day and still find new things you just have to capture. I grew up there and of course always knew it was pretty, but as an adult have a new found appreciation for just how unique the island is.
