The Soothing Power of Water

Water… life, movement, freedom. It has always intrigued and inspired me. The constant flow, the changing shapes and patterns, the fleeting quality of everything you see. Water has so many personalities and is never the same. That perfect wave you saw yesterday is long gone and is never coming back. That circle of reflected light with the intriguing pattern dissolved as quickly as it appeared. It’s never going to look exactly like that ever again. Catching those special, once in a lifetime moments and preserving them is a treasure hunt I never tire of.

I took these pictures on a calm, warm and very foggy fall day in New England. The fog first appeared over the ocean like a wispy white wall and within seconds had hidden almost everything from sight, softened the sounds, and made you feel like you were alone in the world. It came and went and one second, you’d catch a glimpse of a dog running across the beach a few meters away; the next, you couldn’t see further than your outstretched arm.

I sat in the sand at the edge of the water, and whenever the fog let a little bit more of the view through, took pictures of the ocean and small waves that seemed to appear out of nowhere. I don’t know how long I sat there, it could have been hours. I just couldn’t tear myself away. It was such a wonderful, meditative afternoon, and when I finally left, I felt calmer and more centered than I had in a long time.

It was one of those days that stay with you, and I held on to that feeling for quite some time afterwards. Now, whenever I feel like I need to take a step back and check in with myself in a mindful way, I look at these pictures, and that dreamlike feeling returns. I hope they do the same for you.
