Hi! I’m Cattie Coyle; welcome to my blog! Enjoy your visit, and if you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I’d love to hear from you!
I was born in Stockholm, Sweden and grew up on the island of Gotland. Spending most of my time on the beach and in and on the water gave me a deep appreciation and love for the ocean and life on the coast.
I picked up photography in my early teens because of my horrible eyesight. Before anyone realized I needed glasses, I either saw everything as a pretty, colorful, blurry haze, or looked at things extremely close up, focusing on the tiniest details. How something felt (emotionally) was more important than how it looked. I also discovered early on that the quality of the light plays a huge part in how we perceive something (think of the steely blue of the north Atlantic in winter versus the turquoise hues of the Caribbean Sea and how you feel about both those images), and studying light became as important, if not even more so, than “looking at things”. When I realized that a camera could help me record and share the way I saw things with others, I was hooked.
After spending many years “shooting for fun,” I went to photography school to learn more. I graduated from New England School of Photography (NESOP) in Boston, MA in 1994.
About my Images
I’m inspired by the world around me, by the quality of the light, the atmosphere of a scene, and the stillness that can exist in the midst of chaos. My photographs are not about what you see, they are about how you feel when you look at them. My goal with every shot is to capture and preserve a moment and the the mood that accompanies it. I never stage my images, they are “found moments” discovered on a lifelong photography treasure hunt.
My work has been featured on blogs and in books, magazines, calendars and advertising world wide. My image “Water No. 1” was included in the group show “Best of NEPR 2016” in Belmont, MA.
I am a member of APA (American Photographic Artists) and proud supporter of several marine conservation organizations.
