Beautiful, Cool and Weird Clouds

Beautiful, cool, and weird clouds on the coast of New England

One of the many things I love about living on the coast is the rapid change in weather and how it can go from sunny to stormy, and back again, in no time. There is something so majestic about those dark clouds appearing over the horizon and seemingly racing towards you.

I especially love the beautiful and sometimes strange cloud formations and vivid colors that often come before and after these changes. It’s amazing how different the clouds can look from one day to the next, and I can (and do! :-)) spend a LOT of time shooting cool and weird clouds.

It’s pretty wild that all they are is water drops or ice crystals and dust particles with just the right lighting. Nature never ceases to amaze me! These are a few cloud images that I’ve captured over the past few years on Cape Ann.

I only know the name of one of these cloud patterns – the Kelvin–Helmholtz clouds (above left); that really cool formation that looks like waves, and supposedly inspired van Gogh when he painted “Starry Night”.

Fun fact: I photographed that image wearing an evening gown. We were going to a fancy holiday party and I was waiting for my husband to get ready when I happened to glance out the window and saw this. I grabbed the camera, threw some boots on, and ran out to shoot. It was freezing, but I’m so happy I caught it!

I love the colors in this image! It’s available as a print here: Cloud No. 3

If anyone knows what the other cloud formations here are called, please share – I’d love to know!
