Cloud Spotting and New Work: Abstract Clouds

Do you like cloud spotting? I love it! As a child I spent countless hours lying on the lawn looking for shapes and patterns in the sky, and never really grew out of that fascination with what nature can create with only water droplets and ice crystals.
My Dad used to teach me the names of every cloud formation we saw and explain the aerodynamic properties of each. He flew glider planes and was always on the lookout for the right conditions, or “good thermals” as he used to say.
These days, I spend a lot less time than I would like lying around looking at clouds, but whenever I happen to spot an amazing formation, it feels like a gift from nature. An upcoming change in weather usually means cool clouds and fantastic colors, and I often head out with my camera right before a storm.
The images in this new short series were all captured on Cape Ann in Massachusetts right before and after three different winter storms. Thank you nature! 🙂

PS. I have to confess that I’m not entirely sure what these particular formations are called. I think the clouds in the teal colored image (Clouds No. 2) are probably some form of undulatus clouds, and ones in the vertical image (Clouds No. 3) are probably Undulatus Asperatus, aka Asperitas. If anyone knows what they are called, please share – I’d love to know.
